1970's vintage HP laser interferometer. Still works. What drives you to dumpster dive?

I found a set of 4 mikuni carbs. Cleaned them so they open again but surely they need a rebuild.

I would repurpose the display in a second. Want.

I don’t usually go a-picking, but I did save a few things from going into the dumpster on various demolition jobs.

I currently have a small stack of bulletproof windows from a bank tear-out that are just waiting for a project idea. They’re about 1-1/4" thick, and measure 18" x 15-1/2”.

The big Marconi console stereo that my other stuff is sitting on was about to be headed to the junkyard when I saved it. Got it fixed once, for now it’s furniture until I decide to fix it again

Ahhh man, I had to destroy one of these and they wouldn’t let me keep the nixie tunes from it... those things are rad.

Does this count? I rescued it from a trip to the junkyard.

That's a shame. I want the tubes for Arduino but I just can't bring myself to rip it apart. It's such a cool piece of equipment. The HeNe laser still fires.

What are Nixie tubes going for these days?

That interferometer is really cool too, even though I don't really understand what it does

It’s high precision/accuracy test and measurement equipment for high-spec aerospace and scientific engineering disciplines. If you’ve got to know a dimension down to a 10^-3 inch, you go vernier. If you need to measure down to 10^-8 or less inches, you go interferometer.

Ah not sure about individually but some clock set ups are expensive. I would look up some plans and make one. If you want money I guess check Ebay listings or ask someone who makes them, do they make new ones?

I don’t think they’re on the market anymore. I’m not interested in selling them, I was just curious.

Yeah, thankfully you can buy tubes if it comes down to it.

Yeah, that could be fun.

I don’t think it’s actual glass (acrylic, or polycarbonate maybe?). I cut some smaller pieces to keep my tool cabinets off of the garage floor so they don’t rust as easily.

But I still have about a dozen sheets of it sitting in a corner. If I’m really hurting for room, it’ll just go right back into the trash I saved it from.

long time ago, and long since sold, but I pulled a complete SUN 3/110 system with 2gb of HD (4x500 in RAID), 21" SUN monitor and 1x Sony SCSI CD-ROM drive. All worked perfectly, used it as an email server for many years.

Holy shit that’s cool! I love the nixie tube display on the front!

I always had this idea to do an atom-punk style car build using like a ‘40 Merc or something right after the war, maybe a Studebaker Commander. Chop it, channel it, lower it, in the custom “lead-sled” style. And because the theme is retro-future I’d power it with either a small gas turbine in direct drive, or a tubine-generator powering electric drive. And the cockpit would be outfitted with a “crude” computer with a bunch of nixies for display. I’m thinking a nixie speedo, maybe embedded in the dash with a mirror display to make it like a “Heads Up” and then in the center stack a big nixie display with a push-button cycle with indicator lights to cycle through engine functions.

I want the Nixie tubes to arduino with, but I can’t bear the thought of ripping into it. It’s a functional 40+ year old instrument that cost well north of six figures when new. I adore historical scientific equipment, books and instruments. Standing on the shoulders of giants, as it were.

I agree with you, I wouldn’t hack it up just for the tubes if it’s still in working order. Old scientific equipment is very interesting so as long as it works, just let it do it’s thing. Do you have any lasers to interfere with it?
